Description: Study of the major works of American romanticism, including Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Hawthorne, Melville, Poe, Fuller, Douglass, and other writers. Prerequisites: C- or better in both HMXP 102 and ENGL 211, or graduate status, or permission of the instructor. Notes: Offered periodically.

Description: Introduction to language acquisition and the phonology, morphology, and syntax of Old, Middle, and Modern English, with an emphasis on the major causes and patterns of language change. Notes: Offered in fall. Prerequisites: Successful completion of one course in a foreign language. WRIT 101 is a prerequisite for all ENGL courses. HMXP 102 and a previous ENGL course are prerequisites to any 500-level ENGL course.

Topics will vary depending on the instructor, but may include writers such as Chaucer, Milton, Shakespeare, Austen, Twain, Vonnegut, Morrison, etc. Prerequisite: 6 hours of ENGL courses with a grade of C- or better, or graduate status. Notes: Offered periodically.
