EDCO 202: Effective Practices for Exceptional Learners in the P-12 Classroom

Description: Lecture and field-based course that applies content of the developmental sciences to addressing the needs of students with disabilities in the general education classroom. Candidates will explore exceptional learner characteristics and implement evidence-based strategies to address diverse needs. Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in EDCO 200. Corequisite: EDCO 201. Notes: A grade of C or better is required for Teacher Education majors/minors. This course cannot be taken for S/U credit. Students should enroll in EDCO 201 and EDCO 202 during the same semester. Approximately 18 hours of field work will be completed for this course. Offered in fall, spring, and summer.

Teacher candidates will explore the identification and characteristics of individuals with gifts and talents and use evidence-based strategies to support a student identified as gifted. Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in EDUC200. Notes: A grade of C or better is required for Teacher Education majors/minors. This course cannot be taken for S/U credit. Students should enroll in EDCO201, EDCO202, and EDCO203 in the same semester. Approximately 10 hours of field work will be completed for this course. Students are encouraged to take EDUC 220 before enrolling in this course.

Students will learn the applied skills of leadership to teach "College Readiness? to diverse students at a local high school. College Readiness includes, but is not limited to; teaching high school students how to build a schedule, study for and take exams, sign up for a tutor, join campus clubs and organizations, maintain wellness in all dimensions, etc. College Readiness Leaders will assist with the planning and implementation of the Campus Visit event.
