Description: PEAC 200 seeks to introduce students to the study of peace and conflict resolution. Students study the philosophy of peace studies, the major events in the quest for peace and justice throughout the world, and the lives of peace activists and scholars. Notes: Offered in fall. Study of ways that religious thought contributes to conflict and/or peaceful coexistence. Example topics include extremism and terrorism, religion and race, religion and socially divisive issues, and religious responses to religious diversity. Pre-req: 12 earned hours of college credit.

Description: This course introduces liberation theology, a movement begun in Latin America that develops religious thought addressing social justice and marginalized peoples. Subtypes considered include Black, Feminist, and Queer theologies as well as theologies of disability. Cross-listed with RELG380, AAMS 390, WMST450,and SOCL350. Notes: This course teaches students about an important movement in religious thought that is not covered in other Winthrop courses and has immediate relevance for contemporary social issues. It contributes to campus-wide diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.

Description: The academic internship in Peace, Justice, and Conflict Resolution Studies must be taken with permission from the director of the minor. Notes: Offered in fall, spring and summer. Prerequisites: Student must have completed or be concurrently enrolled in 12 hours of the Peace, Justice, and Conflict Resolution Studies minor in order to undertake internship.

Description: Social Movements such as the Civil Rights movement, the anti-Vietnam War movement, and the Women's Rights movement have brought about new legislation and changed society as we know it. In this course we will learn why, over the course of the second half of the twentieth century and into the first decade of the twenty-first century, millions of people have taken to the streets to demand change. We will learn how they organized and how they changed history. We will begin our readings just before World War II, and make our way to the present day. All of the movements we will study intersect other social movements going on both in the United States and in other parts of the world. Prerequisite: Writing 101 and HMXP with a C- or better or graduate status. Notes: Cross-listed with HIST 502.
