Traditional and contemporary approaches will be explored through a variety of media, processes and applications to facilitate students' understanding of visual organization as well as provide a solid foundation for subsequent art courses. Required for all Arts majors. Notes: Lab Fee: $100. Offered in fall.

    Description: This course is a fundamental introduction to the elements and principles of 2D design through use of digital tools in combination with some hand-rendered techniques, resulting in comprehensive two-dimensional digital art. Traditional and contemporary approaches will be explored through digital media and a selection of physical media and through processes and applications that facilitate students' understanding of visual organization.

    Description: An introduction to drawing, concentrating on the fundamentals of line, value, perspective, and composition. Course projects will focus on representational drawing from observation using achromatic drawing media and maintaining a sketchbook practice. Notes: Required for all first year Art majors in the programs of BA Art, BFA Studio Art, and BA in Art Education. Lab Fee: $75. Offered in fall and summer.

    Description: This course explores conceptual growth and personal aesthetic through the investigation of traditional and contemporary approaches to three-dimensional art making. This will be achieved through projects focused on experimentation and creative problem-solving using sculpture, ceramics, jewelry/metals, digital technologies, and mixed techniques. Required for all first year Art majors. Prerequisites: 12 earned hours. Notes: Lab Fee: $120. Offered in fall and spring.

    Description: An investigation of various photo media, techniques, and processes. This course will explore lens-less photography with pinhole, photograms, and digital scanner methods. Students will also learn lens-based photography in the darkroom through Holga film cameras and recording digital video with their camera phones. Students will be taught programs from the Adobe Creative Suite for digital video and photo editing. This course will address various contemporary photographic practices and the medium's complex relationship to self-portraiture. Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on utilizing the craft of photography to investigate and produce representations of the self.
