Description: This course focuses on the history of the southern Mediterranean from the era of Roman dominance (circa 400 CE) through the golden years of the Ottoman Empire. In addition to Islam, the continent of Africa is introduced as a region containing relevant and powerful cultures that played a significant role in regional and world history during the Middle Ages. Prerequisite: Prerequisite for all 300 and 500 level courses in History: Sophomore status or permission of the Department Chair; or graduate status. Notes: Offered periodically.

Description: This course examines a key moment in recent world history. Not only were millions of soldiers and civilians slaughtered in the field of battle, but European hegemony over the world was destroyed, major states were destroyed or reshaped, new states were created (Iraq, Yugoslavia) whose artificial nature continues to destabilize world politics, new ideologies were brought to power for the first time during or just after the war (communism, fascism), and the stage was set for an even greater war just twenty years later. Prerequisite: Prerequisite for all 300 and 500 level courses in History is sophomore status or permission of the department chair; or graduate status. Notes: Offered periodically.

Description: History of Germany since the 1850s, including the rise of Bismarck, the unification of Germany, the First World War, Hitler, the Third Reich, the Holocaust, division between East and West in the Cold War, and reunified Germany's present-day dominate role in Europe. Description: This course will examine the most notorious and deadly regime in human history, the Third Reich that ruled Germany between 1933 and 1945, that initiated the European phase of the Second World War, and which was responsible for the deaths of many millions between 1939 and 1945, including the clearest historical example of genocide, the attempt to annihilate Europe's Jewish population in the Holocaust. Notes: Offered periodically.

Description: This course explores aspects of Chinese women's lives from the mid-19th century to the present, with particular focus on women's family roles and socioeconomic activities, the sources and development of their agency, and the women's rights movement. Themes include women and modernity, women and the state, and women and family. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing or permission of instructor.

Description: This course explores China's foreign relations and foreign policy from the mid-19th to the 21st centuries, with particular focus on the conflicts among different notions of world order. Themes include nationalism and internationalism, the Unequal Treaties from the mid-19th century to 1949, Mao Zedong's foreign policy, and China's rise in the late 20th century.
