Description: This course is designed to provide students with a thorough understanding of the Black political experience in the United States. It considers relevant historical background and context, the constitutional framework of American government, and the nature of interactions with the main institutions of government. What is more, the course focuses on the role and participation of Blacks in US government and politics as well as the role of political parties, independent group politics, and social movements. In the process, the course highlights the black struggle for freedom, justice, equality, and full inclusion in the American political community. The role of race, class, and gender in African American politics is a concomitant focus of the course. Notes: Cross-listed with PLSC 317. Offered periodically.
