This is a survey course in chemistry for non-science majors emphasizing basic principles. Topics include atomic and molecular structure, nuclear chemistry, formulas and nomenclature, states of matter, chemical reactions, acids and bases. Laboratory sections emphasize applications of basic techniques and supplement lecture topics. This course addresses the chemistry of societal issues, including alternative energy sources and the impact humans have on the environment. This course will not serve as a prerequisite for CHM 105 or CHM 111.

This is a survey course in chemistry for non-science majors emphasizing applications of chemistry to present society. Topics include organic chemistry, polymers, biochemistry, consumer and environmental chemistry, drugs, fitness and health. Laboratory sections emphasize applications of basic techniques and supplement lecture topics. Other topics include nuclear energy, alternative energy sources, and genetic engineering. This course is a continuation of CHM 106. This course does not serve as a prerequisite for CHM 211.

This is the first in a sequence of courses that includes nomenclature, structure and properties, and reaction mechanisms of basic organic chemistry. (University Transfer) Entry Level Skills: A student should be able to use general chemistry concepts such as: acid/base, thermochemistry, intermolecular forces, structure/bonding, equilibria, kinetics, and stoichiometry. In addition, a student should be able to use mathematical concepts such as: exponential numbers, significant figures, metric (SI) conversions, logarithms, and basic algebra.

This course is a continuation of basic organic chemistry. Topics include nomenclature, structure and properties, reaction mechanisms of basic organic chemistry, biochemistry, and spectroscopy. (University Transfer) Entry Level Skills: A student should be able to use general chemistry concepts such as: acid/base, thermochemistry, intermolecular forces, structure/bonding, equilibria,kinetics, and stoichiometry. In addition, a student should be able to use basic organic chemistry concepts such as: structure/bonding, electron flow (resonance and mechanisms), nomenclature (alkane, alkene, alkyne, and aromatic), and reactions (alkane, alkene, alkyne, and aromatic). This course is the study of the major biochemical processes, including those related to proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, DNA replication and transcription, carbohydrates, lipids and their associated pathways and significance. This course serves as an introduction to bimolecule structure, function, synthesis and metabolism as found in living organisms. Entry Level Skills: Students taking this course should be able to carry out basic arithmetic calculations and should have college level organic chemistry (including general chemistry) knowledge and college level biology knowledge.
