ARTE 621.THEORY AND PEDAGOGY IN ART EDUCATION This course provides a historical context for current theory and teaching practices in the field of art education. Issues in the broader education landscape as well as those specific to art are explored. This course includes a clinical experience in a public school. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the MAT graduate degree program or instructor permission. Three credit hours.

This course explores how the processes of art making and teaching are similarly rooted in creativity and problem solving. The course examines the relationships between individual artistic practices and emerging teaching practices. Coursework includes the creation of an original body of artwork which is displayed in the MAT Exhibition. This course may be repeated for a maximum of 6 credit hours. Three credit hours.

This course contains three major components. The first is the selection and preparation of K-12 student artworks for exhibition. The second component is the creation, preparation, installation, and publicity of a cohesive body of the candidate's original artwork from ARTE 631 courses. The third component is the presentation and summative defense of artist and teacher portfolios, which are evaluated by professionals in the fields of art, art education, and education. Prerequisite: Acceptance into MAT graduate program. Pre-requisite or co-requisite: EDUC 601. Three credit hours.

This course introduces the history of global art with a focus on ancient civilizations through the end of the Medieval Period. Art works or sites representative of these periods will be considered in their physical, historical, and social contexts. Emphasis will be placed on both visual analysis (honing the student's descriptive, analytical, and interpretive skills) and contextual history. (General Education - Humanities and Fine Arts). Three credit hours.

This course surveys European art from 1840 - 1900, with the inclusion of comparative examples of global contemporary art. A major focus of the course is the genesis of the idea of "modernism." Emphasis is placed on how artists developed new conceptions of the social purpose of their art, as well as ways in which artist identity was manifested in specific technical practices. Students are encouraged to consider how the works of early-modernist artists might be models of creativity in the present. Prerequisites: ARTH 111 and ARTH 112, or instructor permission. Three credit hours.
