This course prepares students for applied professional experiences in the arts, including volunteering, internships, practica, and careers, through a combination of skill development and theoretical knowledge to promote holistic professional and personal development. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to complete internships and other professional experiences in the field of arts management, while also gaining a greater understanding of how to interact in the world as an arts management professional. This course introduces students to the unique aspects and practices of arts organizations in relation to research and strategic planning for programming, marketing, fundraising, budgeting and human resources.

Students will analyze and develop market research and learn practices to increase cultural participation and develop arts audiences. They will assess current and potential audiences and demographics, examine lifestyle, leisure time habits, national and international trends and social values, and participate in different types of arts experiences.

The course will explore creativity from discovery to production. By observation and engagement in the arts and within related institutions, students will examine creative ideas, thought, and perspectives; people and their environments; and the anatomy of self-expression.

This course introduces students to the process of releasing music from manufacturing and distribution to publishing, promotion, and licensing. Emphasis will be on the legal and financial challenges of the new music marketplace, the changing role of record labels, and social media marketing.

This course is a study of the financial aspects of nonprofit arts organizations to include budgeting, earned and contributed income, trend analysis, asset restrictions, fundraising, cash flow management, economic impact, cultural economics, and financial decisions.

This course will explore the elements, processes and management of philanthropy, fund raising, and development in terms of generating earned revenue, and raising funds from public and private contributed income sources and grant writing amonst artists, art managers, non-profit arts organizations, and artistic enterprises. This course will provide students with a hands-on learning arts fundraising event development and management experience. Working as a group and in sub-committees, students will implement a special fundraising event either in conjunction with the School of the Arts or with an outside arts non-profit. The project will encompass the full range of tasks related to an event, including initial research and planning, logistics, marketing, location, staffing, budgeting, and post-event evaluation/follow up.
