The course deals with a wide variety of health issues of concern to women. Major categories of topics include utilization of the health care system, issues of concern to women of diverse backgrounds, normal physiological health and well-being, common physiological and psychological health problems, and cultural as well as societal influences on women's health. The course is designed to provide students with an overview on how to identify population-based health needs and develop culturally competent public health programs to address those needs. Students will learn and apply the proces and tools used for public health programming, including needs assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Applications of these concepts in a variety of settings, including but not limited to schools, worksites, health care organizations, and communities will be considered.

The purpose of this course is to investigate health issues specific to women and girls through interdisciplinary research collaborations and communicate research findings and health-related information to empower women and girls in our community, South Carolina, and beyond. This course will incorporate multiple methodologies to better understand women's health, including reproductive health. This course will take a multi- and interdisciplinary approach to women's health research, drawing from behavioral and social science, public health, communication, and social marketing. Students will conduct praxis-oriented research that bridges the gap between theory and practice, informing the development of community-based public health interventions. This course addresses the main aspects of nutrition as related to exercise and physical performance. Emphasis will be placed on the energy systems in exercise, components of nutrients, assessment of nutritional needs and diet modification for physically active individuals. This course is designed to introduce the basic tenets, applications, and foci of environmental health, including integrating environmental health concepts with other health professions. It will provide a foundation in environmental risk, epidemiology, toxicology, and regulation; an overview of agents of environmental disease; a discussion on applications of environmental health; and an exploration of current events and issues in the field.
