The course introduces students to key themes of the Quran and its role as the ultimate source of authority for Muslims. The course depicts how the Quran was revealed, transmitted, compiled, disseminated and interpreted. In addition, the course will examine some current, and in some cases controversial, issues (e.g. the role of women in Islam, Jihad, the Islamic view of other religious traditions, etc.) and explore how particular Quranic passages habe been cited and interpreted with respect to these issues.
