Survey of the history of Italian literature and culture from early development of the Italian language in the 13th century up to the Italian Risorgimento (second half of the 18th century). Students will read selected texts of the Italian literary tradition in order to develop a foundational understanding of literary traditions that have constructed "Italian' identity(ies). Students will also read secondary readings to facilitate an understanding of historical, political, and cultural contexts. (F)
