This course is an introduction to the major themes in nineteenth-century European art, with an emphasis on French, and to a lesser degree, American art. Beginning with the art of the pre-Revolutionary period and ending with the Post-Impressionists, this course will include a discussion of the impact of the resolutions of 1789, 1830, and 1848, the Napoleonic presence abroad, the shift from history paintings to scenes of every day life, and changes in attitude toward sexuality.
