A survey of forensic science and crime scene investigations through the use of a systematic theory that follows scientific principles. A laboratory is included on basic steps of crime scene analysis and techniques with reference to forensic entomology, botany, pathology, blood chemistry, anthropology, physical and trace evidence, and ballistics. Prerequisite: Any general education science course with laboratory.

A survey of drug and alcohol use, abuse, and their relationships to the criminal justice system and society. The use of alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, prescription drugs, and illicit drugs are explored, including explanations for misuse and dependence with emphasis on the economic and social costs to society. The role of the criminal justice system as an agent of social control in the containment of chemical dependence and abuse are also considered.

A survey of the financing of local, state, and federal governments. Special emphasis to the three functions of government: stabilization, distribution, and allocation. All major taxes that are presented in the United States are studied as to structure, revenue gained, and present status.

An introduction to public administration both as a discipline and profession, including organization theory, budgeting, public policy analysis and evaluation, and public sector administration.

A course designed to provide the student with a real-world opportunity to solve a significant criminal justice management problem, make an important executive decision, and implement a plan of action to improve the agency. Students select, design, research, and write an extensive project report for the governmental agency.

A study of the methods of terrorism (domestic and international), terrorist operations, cyber-terrorism, and the mind of the terrorist within a national response of providing for homeland security. The roles undertaken by local, state, and national agencies to respond to the threat of terrorism are given specific consideration.

A study of the ethical background and decision-making steps that are present in value-laden situations, with particular emphasis of Christian principles for personal and social responsibility as applied to management and leadership. Situational considerations dealing with racial profiling, gratuities and political climates are explored.

A study of the major systems of thought about criminal justice. Special emphasis is given to the historical context and philosophical background of the field of criminal justice, particularly as related to embracing and advocating for a restorative process of application to the field of criminal justice. Prerequisite: 9 hours of criminal justice including CJU1003; CJU1002 is recommended.
