Formal, informal methods of diagnosis, assessment, and monitoring progress in the areas of development. Prerequisites: EDFI 301 or EDFI 302 or EDFI 303. Graded. Extra fee.

The nature and characteristics of students with special needs; models, theories, and philosophies on which special education practices have been based; and legal issues in definitions and identification of disabilities and regulations regarding assessment and IEPs. Spring. History, philosophy, psychology and education of students who are deaf/hard of hearing. Definitions of types and classifications of hearing impairments. Cognitive, social, and linguistic development of individuals with hearing loss and implications for education. Prerequisite: EDIS 231 or EDIS 431 or EDIS 435.
