The focus of this course is medical office bookkeeping procedures and processing of insurance claims. Areas covered include: banking and billing procedures, accounts receivable, collections, applying managed care and third party guidelines, medical coding, completing insurance claim forms, utilizing and maintaining billing software. Building on Medical Assistant Clinical Procedures I, this course expands learning to include additional procedures performed in the medical office setting. Medical Emergencies, first aid and principles of parenteral therapy are also covered. Prerequisite: MAST 120. Offered: Spring.

Instruction includes the performing of respiratory and CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) waived hematology, chemistry, immunology and microbiology testing. This course will also cover the principles of radiology, maintenance of laboratory equipment and quality control. Prerequisite: MAST 125L. Offered: Spring.

Students are asked to solve problems using the case method, be interviewed by and received feedback from a healthcare professional and create a self-evaluation tool for future use. This learning opportunity is a supervised, unpaid internship of 175 hours in an ambulatory health-care setting performing administrative and clinical procedures consistent with the duties of a medical assistant. Travel may be required. Corequisite: MAST 290. Prerequisite: MAST 220. Offered: Summer.

Topics include a review of operations on fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percents, signed number operations, polynomials, American and metric measurements, elements of linear algebra and word problems and use of the basic handheld calculator.
