This course is a conti nuati on of INDT 216A and INDT 216B and will provide work experience with a cooperati ng nuclear-energy-based company. Students will work as a trainee under the supervision of an experienced technician and will be provided with relevant learning experiences directly related to material handler and logisti c skills as identi fi ed within the nuclear industry. This cooperati ve experience is intended for students seeking an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Industrial Technology and who are sponsored by a parti cipati ng company. This is a six credit hour course.

This course will provide students with the basics of the Quality Assurance Program's purpose, implementati on, and worker role in achieving quality in work assignments. Students will be aware of the Correcti ve Acti on Program, the Safety Conscious Work Environment, and Employee Concerns Program. This is a one credit hour course.

This two-semester course is designed to introduce the student to the Health Care Field, primarily focusing on basic job entry level skills and knowledge needed to become a Certi fi ed Nursing Assistant. The course provides instructi on in the care of pati ents of health-care agencies, basic anatomy, and physiology of all the systems of the human body. Numerous fi eld trips are scheduled throughout this class to expose the student to the many health care fi elds of study. The student will become CPR certi fi ed during this course. Preparati on to perform basic nursing skills through classroom instructi on and practi cal experience is practi ced at our local health care faciliti es. The course syllabus meets the objecti ves of NMJC course, NU 113, Nursing Assistant. Prerequisite: The following tests and vaccinati ons are required prior to entering the program: Tuberculin Skin Test, B. Rubella Titer, Hepati ti s B Vaccinati on (series of 3 shots). Prior course in general math and biology will be helpful but are not required.

Upon turning 18 years of age the student may then practi ce as a certi fi ed nursing assistant aft er successful completi on of this exam. This course is 150 clock hours and is approved by New Mexico Department of Health, Health Facility Licensing and Certi fi cati on Bureau. The course is designed to teach the student the necessary knowledge and skills to deliver responsible and safe health care for residents in nursing and long-term care faciliti es under qualifi ed supervision of a nurse. Close personal care requires a sensiti ve and knowledgeable caregiver, who has a good understanding of pati ent needs, as well as, personal interacti on with other health care team members. This course includes an introducti on to health care and the role of the nurse aide; understanding the body structure, functi on and needs; safety in the provision of care; and sati sfactory performance of basic care skills. The classroom and nursing skills laboratory porti on of the course is taught at a NMJC facility. The course has specifi c requirements: CPR, TB screening, malpracti ce insurance, Rubella ti ter, physical exam, and a criminal background check. The background check will identi fy a felony convicti on which will render the applicant ineligible for admission to the course. A felony convicti on disqualifi es an applicant from parti cipati ng in the clinical porti on of this course and other nursing courses. The clinical porti on of the course is conducted in a licensed, certi fi ed area health care agency. The student must sati sfactorily meet the objecti ves of the course's computerized exams, laboratory skills performance, and clinical practi ce to be eligible for course completi on. Successful completi on of this course enti tles the student to take the New Mexico Nurse Aide Skills and Writt en Exam (computerized). This is a fi ve credit hour course with a lab component.

This course uti lizes a body systems approach to introduce fundamentals of nursing with a focus on the nursing process, assessment, communicati on, physiological, psychological (mental health), social, spiritual, and cultural considerati ons when identi fying client health care needs. The student will have the opportunity to develop plans of care based on age and developmentally appropriate needs of the client. This course will allow the student to demonstrate legal, ethical, safe, and eff ecti ve nursing care while focusing on the needs of individuals, families, and groups of clients. This course includes a laboratory component with campus laboratory hours (which may include simulati on) and/or clinical learning experiences at local health care agencies. This is a nine credit hour course. Co-requisite: PC 113

This course will address professional practi ce issues that will assist learners in preparing for the transiti on from practi cal nursing student to Licensed Practi cal Nurse. Discussion of the role of the practi cal nurse in relati on to other members of the health care team will foster an understanding of the independent and interdependent functi ons of the practi cal nurse. Collaborati on, advocacy, and partnership are concepts criti cal to the role of the practi cal nurse, caring for persons and focusing on the legal, ethical, and philosophical bases for practi ce. The PN role, interdisciplinary team, principles of nursing management, delegati on, reporti ng and documenti ng are discussed. Also included in this course are content and experiences designed to help students prepare for the NCLEX-PN. Content and applicati on opportuniti es based on group NCLEX-PN preparati on needs (identi fi ed by group performance on ATI NCLEX-PN Predictor Assessment) will be provided. Students will also be directed to develop and implement with guidance an individual plan for NCLEX-PN preparati on. This is a two credit hour course.
