This course introduces students to factors which influence an individual's response to exercise training as related to physical therapy. Students learn about the health benefits of exercise, immediate physiological responses and long-term adaptations to exercise. Emphasis on principles underlying the development of strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance are examined. Practical application of course content will be applied through laboratory study. Students taking this course are advised that the capability to exercise moderately and maximally will be necessary.

This course will provide the student with the opportunity to understand the musculoskeletal structure and function of the human body in greater detail than presented in his/her introductory anatomy and physiology courses. Each major joint of the body will be studied. The student will learn to assess the range of motion of these joints through goniometric measurement. The prime movers (muscles) of the major joints will be examined within the context of: origin, insertion, innervation, and action. The student will learn to assess functional muscle strength by performing manual muscle testing. This knowledge will be presented in terms of normal anatomy and related to dysfunction commonly seen in physical therapy practice.
