The growth of population during the 18th century. Rise of the opium trade. The Opium War. The Taiping Rebellion and reform efforts.

World view, language, spiritual beliefs, kinship organization, gender roles, music, dance, and art. Historical causes and effects of the changing of Native cultures over time. Contrasts between Native American oral history and Western methods.
