Credit Hours: 5.00. Students have the option of choosing to work on either the soft tissue surgery service, the orthopedic/neurosurgery service, or both services (comprehensive). Students are given more primary responsibility for case management, including acting as the primary surgeon when appropriate cases are available. Students are expected to gain more in-depth working knowledge of various anesthetic protocols and be able to use a ventilator. Students are expected to develop more advanced diagnostic and surgical skills to enable them to manage more complex cases, such as various fractures (utilizing bone plating, sophisticated external fixator configurations), cruciate and patellar surgeries, diaphragmatic hernias, thoracotomies, and spinal surgeries in small dogs. Cadavers are utilized to supplement clinical experience. Students with an interest in experimental surgery may have the opportunity to participate in research projects within or outside the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Total clinic hours 212. The student is expected to apply one of the many research techniques available in the school to address the question. The experiences gained may allow the candidate to pursue graduate and residency training in theriogenology. An expanded course description for the specific problem to be investigated must be placed on file in the departmental office and in the office of the associate dean of academic affairs. Students at this level of large animal surgery clerkship are expected to function with greater independence, carrying out the history, physical examination, and postoperative care of all elective and certain emergency/intensive care patients of the species of their choice. Depending upon the capabilities and competence of the student, as determined by the surgery faculty and staff, he or she will have the opportunity to conduct supervised surgical procedures. Students may be allowed to spend up to five days off campus to work with a veterinarian engaged in practice in the student's area of interest. This off-campus experience should enhance the student's education by complementing experience gained on campus. Total clinic hours 129. Credit Hours: 3.00. This course will focus on food animal surgery and lameness and will only be offered 1-2 times per year. Students will be expected to function with greater independence than during LAS I and II, carrying out the history, physical examination and postoperative care of elective and certain emergency/intensive care patients. Depending upon the capabilities and competence of the student, as determined by the surgery faculty and staff, he/she will have the opportunity to conduct supervised surgical procedures. This block will focus on food animal surgical diseases through seminars, in-clinic hands-on laboratory sessions, rounds discussions and an emphasis on food animal clinical cases.
