An introduction to the world of microorganisms including: viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and fungi. Disease-causing organisms from each group are discussed, as well as diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment. Prokaryotic cell structure, function, and genetics are included along with immunology, epidemiology, and pathogenesis. Laboratory is a required part of this course. PREREQUISITE: SC 161 or equivalent.

The first of a two-semester sequence about the general principles of modern chemistry with emphasis on atomic structure, chemical bonding, the periodic table, equilibria, and elementary thermodynamics. Laboratory is a required part of this course.

The second semester of the two-semester general chemistry sequence. Laboratory is a required part of this course. PREREQUISITE: SC 271 concepts of biochemistry and cell biology are reviewed and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems are covered in depth. Laboratory activities including mammalian dissection required. PREREQUISITE: SC 161 or equivalent.

A course for students with no previous keyboarding experience. Introduces the keyboard and proper keyboarding techniques.

Further development of speed and accuracy. Formatting of business documents will be covered. PREREQUISITE: SE 101 or consent of instructor.

Students learn the touch method on the ten-key calculator. Speed and accuracy are emphasized. Machine functions are used in working basic business problems.

Students will learn the four basic filing systems--Alphabetical, Numeric, Geographic,and Subject. Records retrieval, retention, transfer, requisition, charge-out, and follow-up procedures are also covered. PREREQUISITE: SE 101 or consent of instructor.

Students will learn to conduct a job search, be productive team members, process information via technology, communicate effectively, lead and supervise others, prepare travel arrangement, review records management, prepare for meetings, and other skills needed for the beginning office worker. PREREQUISITE: SE 102

Students will learn how to operate electronic dictating equipment. Transcribing mailable copies will be stressed. PREREQUISITE: SE 102

1.00 Credits
This course will be required of all new students. Course is designed to help students transition into college studies and college life. A major portion of class will be provided by guest speakers. Such subjects will be covered: note taking, library research, research papers, healthy life-styles, career exploration, and learning strategies.
