This course is based on the National Fire Protection Association 1001, "Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifi cations," current edition. The performance requirements and practical skills necessary to perform the duties of a fi refi ghter are thoroughly covered. Topics include fi re service orientation, safety, fi re behavior, self-contained breathing apparatus, ropes, hoses, ladders, rescue, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, portable fi re extinguishers, emergency medical care, fi re control, water supply, and fi re prevention. Individuals successfully completing this course and meeting the requirements of Missouri Division of Fire Safety will be eligible for certifi cation as Firefi ghter I and II by the Division of Safety. Prerequisite: FST 120 or concurrent enrollment, or have documentation of having the state certifi cations for Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations courses.

Emphasis is placed on pre-planning, fi reground decision making, and strategic tactics and strategies. Techniques of fi re control in general and an application of these techniques to fi res are covered.

This course provides an introduction to fi re protection systems including standpipe and hose, sprinklers, dry powder, CO2, foam, smoke detecting, and heat actuating systems. Emphasis is placed on the need for design, installation, and fi re department inspection of the various types of systems.

Emphasis is placed on the handling of hazardous materials, emergencies and fi re control and containment. Individuals successfully completing this course and meeting the requirements of the Missouri Division of Fire Safety will be eligible for state certifi cation to Hazardous Materials Operations level by the Division of Fire Safety.
