This course is a survey of the free enterprise system, the U. S. economy, the economic and social forces affecting the business environment and the social responsibility of business, with an emphasis upon the functional areas of business including formation, management, marketing, finance, insurance, personnel and the legal environment.

This course develops competencies in formatting basic business correspondence, simple reports, tabulated documents and skill building activities. Proofreading, editing, capitalization, number rules, and grammar usage are reinforced. Speed development exercises, accuracy drills, and timed writings will also be included.

This course is an introduction mainly to develop skills in reaching practical solutions to mathematical problems arising in business operations and in personal finances. Students will learn to solve problems in the following areas: checking accounts, bank statements, payroll, ratios, interest, bank discounts, compound interest, present value, income statements, balance sheets, trade discounts, cash discounts, sales commissions, depreciation, corporate stocks and bonds.

This course develops basic word processing skills which include the following: creating, editing, formatting and printing business documents; enhancing documents with features such as fonts, page formatting, tabs, tables, newspaper columns and writing tools; preparing multiple-page documents with headers/footers, page numbering, and finding and replacing text; using predesigned styles and templates; creating and formatting tables; inserting graphic elements; managing documents; and exploring the Internet.
