Attention is given to the introduction of basic sign language vocabulary. More than 600 signs are introduced and made into conversations enabling students to express basic sentences used in conversational sign language. Proper form, hand positioning, speed, and accuracy are emphasized. Students will also spend 2 hours per week in a lab setting practicing and demonstrating skills learned.

This course is a continuation of Sign Language I. Additional vocabulary will be introduced and arranged into complex sentence structure. Students will use familiar signs in addition to gaining new vocabulary, and will begin to expand skills beyond conversational signing to professional signing, particularly as it is applied to more formal settings which utilize interpreters, such as educational, medical, legal, or religious settings. Students will spend two hours per week in a lab setting practicing skills learned.

This course will develop skills in expressive and receptive fingerspelling and numbers. An emphasis will be placed on proper form, hand positioning, speed and accuracy.

This course is designed to introduce students to different aspects of Deaf culture. Topics include: language, norms, values, and traditions of Deaf people, changing social and educational conditions and attitudes influencing Deaf people, and the achievements and accomplishments of Deaf individuals throughout history. Students will also learn about the development of American Sign Language, differences between different methods of signing and interpreting, ethical considerations for those working with the Deaf, and current issues and challenges Deaf individuals face in order to be recognized and assimilated into mainstream culture. Students will be required to participate in activities or field trips outside of class to begin to gain exposure and experience in interacting with the Deaf community.

This course is designed to offer students an opportunity to continue practicing skills they have learned in previous sign language classes and to improve their voice to sign and sign to voice skills, fingerspelling skills, speed, and fluency by signing and interpreting content relevant for a variety of normal social and educational settings.

This course is designed to intensify vocabulary used in contact signing. Students will use familiar signs and learn the difference in meaning with the use of non-manual markers and gestures, as well as refining and enhancing their skills for advanced conversations and storytelling and professional interpreting using appropriate body posture, facial expressions, feelings, and intonation. Students will spend 2 hours per week in a lab setting practicing skills learned. Course material will be delivered primarily with voice off.

This course is designed for the advanced signer who wishes to expand their knowledge to be able to sign effectively in medical and legal settings. Medical and legal vocabulary used in contact signing will be emphasized. Students will use familar signs while learning medical and legal terms, as well as learning about client/ patient rights, ADA guidelines as applied to these settings, and techniques for evaluating and advocating for the Deaf individual as needed.

This course is designed primarily to introduce all aspects of interpreting in a variety of settings and situations, with a particular focus on educational interpreting. Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of Deaf culture, skills learned in ASL and Sign Language prerequisite courses, and will be exposed to the role of an interpreter, Codes of Ethics used for interpreters, EIPA, NAD, and RID guidelines and certification requirements, ADA laws, and the different settings in which interpreters are utlilized.

This course is the final phase of vocabulary development and mastery of skills used in contact signing. New vocabulary will be introduced and the use of word endings in signing will be emphasized. Students will use familiar signs in addition to new vocabulary and demonstrate mastery of skills learned for both conversational and professional settings. Additional focus will be given to expressive skills. Course material will be delivered primarily with voice off.
