This course covers the standards of practice and behavior of the activity professional. Professional code of ethics, resident bill of rights, resident council, safety, infection control, advance directives and their function, confidentiality, and personal health management will be covered to help ensure the quality job performance awareness from the activity professional.

This course covers the care planning and documentation requirements for the activity department. An in-depth review of federal and state requirements for long term-care will be covered as well as regulatory and documentation requirements for other elderly settings. Students will learn the procedure of comprehensive and activity assessments, how to identify resident's needs and interest, write short and long-term goals, progress note documentation, and terminology. Other forms and methods of activity documentation such as attendance records, policies and procedures, and department records will be covered.

This course covers the basics of calendar and program planning and design by identifying basic activity programming areas, preparation of activity groups, developing resources, thematic programming, and the delivery of programs in different elderly settings. Also covered in this course are various methods and ways to promote and motivate activity participation. The student will understand the philosophy of developing and delivering an activity program and build a resource file for planning activity programs.

This course will introduce the the student to the role of an activity manager or director. Topics such as professionalism, responsiblity, accountability, ethical issues, and leadership styles will be covered to provide the student with a foundation and understanding of their position and the changes that go with it.

This course course explores the importance of establishing good community and public relations. Topics covered include media releases, newsletters, diversity and utilizing community resources.

This course covers administrative management and leadership skills that are important for activity directors and managers to have. Topics include personnel management, quality assurance, budgeting, policy and procedures, working with other staff, and organization of time.

This course will focus on communication skills that are essential for activity managers and directors. Topic areas covered include communication through written, verbal and non-verbal methods, effective listening and feedback, leading meetings, problem solving, and staff inservice training.

This course will cover the basics of establishing and running an effective volunteer program. Topics include identifying and recruiting adult and youth volunteers, developing a training and orientation program, managing volunteers on the job, recognition and evaluation. Students will have the opportunity to practice learned volunteer management skills through handson- projects.

This course covers communication skills needed in working effectively with families and the care team. Behavior techniques will also be covered. It is designed to meet licensure hour requirements for providers.

This course will cover ways to communicate the activity program within and outside of the facility or organization. Areas covered include the activity calendar, putting together newsletters, and media publicity.
