From its West African roots to today's Hip Hop, the course will examine Black American music including spirituals, blues, jazz, black symphonic and concert music, gospel, R&B, soul, funk, and rap through an exploration of the music, artistry, and the social dynamics of American society. Instruction is designed to develop knowledge of basic music notation and terminology. Knowledge of rhythm, key and time signatures, major and minor scales, and chord structure is demonstrated through class singing and percussion equipment, as well as entry level recorder, guitar, and piano. No performance occurs outside of class and learning is only done for personal enjoyment and class assessment. Prerequisites: None
