This course teaches the necessary skills to protect oneself, fellow responders, and the public from exposure in a hazardous materials incident. Students will learn how to recognize and identify the presence of hazardous materials, the proper protective clothing to use, accepted decontamination procedures, how to establish an Incident Command System, and the proper standard operating procedures to maintain safety at the incident scene. The course follows chapters 4, 5, 6, and 7 of the National Fire Protection Association 472 standard, Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Incidents. It provides an overview of apparatus construction, especially fire pumps, apparatus operation, preventive maintenance, and water flow calculations. This course will also serve as an introduction to the duties and responsibilities of a fire apparatus operator. A large portion of this class will involve actual operation of fire apparatus.
