WELD 1305: GMAW S Sheet Metal

In this course the student will be introduced how to effectively weld sheet metal (>1/8") using the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process. The student will have the opportunity to perform fillet welds on T- and lap joints in the horizontal and vertical positions. They will also practice welding groove joints in the flat, horizontal, and vertical positions as well as being able to correctly identify various types of groove welds. Prerequisite: None.

This course will primarily focus on Gas Metal Arc Welding - Pulse (GMAW-P) welding on carbon steel. Students will start out welding on 0.25- 0.375" thick material and will transition into welding on thicker (up to 1.5") and thinner (16 gauge) carbon steel weldments. Students will also practice welding on tube/pipe with GMAW-P in accordance with area manufacturers. Prerequisite: None.

This course was designed to give the student the opportunity to develop skill welding aluminum base metal with the Gas Metal Arc Welding - Pulse (GMAW-P) process. Students will practice welding on sheet/plate aluminum in the flat, horizontal, and vertical positions with both fillet and groove weld types. There is also a tube-to-plate and tube-to-tube component that will be included as well. Prerequisite: None.

Topics to be covered will include types of stainless steels, uses and application of stainless steels, matching filler metals to base metals, and how to weld mild steel to stainless steel. Students will also have the opportunity to practice welding stainless fillet weld in the flat, horizontal, and vertical positions. They will also practice welding groove welds in the flat and horizontal positions. All welds will be made to meet industry standards of acceptability. Prerequisite: None.

This course is designed for those students that have significant experience welding with the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process on steel or stainless base material. Students will have the opportunity to make non-food grade welds on tubing and/or pipe. The student will also be introduced to techniques and equipment used for purging stainless steels to make food grade welds on tubing and/or pipe. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.
