(Meets MnTC Goal 7) Explores theories of and factors influencing communication between individuals of different cultures. Topics: definitions of communication; definitions of culture and diversity of cultural patterns, cultural variables influencing communication, such as language, non-verbal behavior, perception, values, and beliefs; factors that facilitate or inhibit intercultural communication; and examination of American culture in comparison to other cultures.

(Meets MnTC Goals 1 and 2) The small group has become the most common setting for speech communication. Therefore, communication within the small task-oriented group is studied as it relates to cohesiveness, leadership, role structures, communication networks, decision-making, and analysis of questions of fact, value and policy. The course is designed to help the student become a more effective communicator, both as a leader and as a participant in small group communication.

Prerequisite: Two courses in speech successfully completed Designed to offer students the opportunity to do extensive reading or research on a specified topic in speech.

As an introduction to the concepts and methods needed to increase study efficiency, the course acquaints students with better study habits. Topics include listening, efficient textbook reading, time scheduling, note taking, test strategies, project and paper development, library skills, and basic study systems improvement.

(Meets MnTC Goals 6 and 8) Provides an introduction to Sweden with emphasis on its history, literature, arts, and on present political and social trends as well as its relationship to the other Scandinavian nations. The course is taught in English; no knowledge of Swedish is required.

(Cross-listed as HUM 2200) Takes students to Sweden to observe firsthand both ancient and modern components of Swedish civilization, including Sweden's relationship with the other Scandinavian nations. When offered as a study tour, a classroom segment precedes the trip, covering such items as the history and geography of the areas to be visited and cultural differences to be experienced. No knowledge of Swedish is required.
