Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in READ 100 or satisfactory test score. Bioethics is the philosophical study of the ethical controversies brought about by advances in biology and medicine. Bioethicists are concerned with the ethical questions that arise in the relationships among life sciences, biotechnology, medicine, politics, law, philosophy and theology. This course explores ethical issues arising in medicine, nursing and other health care professions. Issues include truth-telling and confidentiality, informed consent, fetal versus maternal rights, euthanasia, the treatment of AIDS, genetic testing and engineering, scarce medical resources and social health care policy.
