Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in BIOL 110, HEED 107, HEED 131 and HEED 132 or permission of appropriate instructional Dean; minimum of NREMT-B certification and/or State of MI EMT-B licensure required. Provides the introduction of paramedic skills required for advanced life support and provides the opportunity to apply theory to field practice in a discussion and skills lab setting. Skills will be demonstrated, practiced during supervised labs, and tested for competency. Students are also evaluated in the management of simulated emergencies. [Semesters Offered: Fall]

This course provides scenario based learning situations for the student to enhance their theoretical and clinical skills. Topics of discussion will include management of emergent conditions such as asthma, hypoglycemia, burns, trauma, and other conditions. Time will be spent on improving assessment and treatment skills. Prerequisite: This course will discuss various medical conditions and the paramedics role in dealing with these clients. The course will have a heavy concentration on various cardiac conditions and the emergency treatment modalities associated with these conditions. [Semesters Offered: Winter]

This course will discuss various clinical situations that the paramedic may encounter during their practice. Topics of discussion will include: hazardous material handling and operations, crime scene awareness, and medical incident command. A major part of this course will be a review of all previous material and clinical skills in preparation for the certification exam. [Semesters Offered: Winter]

The internship is designed to be a clinical capstone course to the paramedic curriculum. This clinical experience is designed to help the student integrate all of the didactic knowledge, psychomotor skills and clincial experience they have experienced during the course of the program. The internship will occur in an emergency medical service under the close supervision of a preceptor. The student will be expected to demonstrate competency on all clinical skills previously acquired during this clinical sequence. [Semesters Offered: Spring]

Prerequisites: Minimum of grade of C in PARA 102, PARA 103, PARA 110, PARA 114, PARA 118, and PARA 122. This course provides clinical experience for paramedic students in areas including hospital units such as emergency departments, critical care units, obstetrics, pediatrics, surgery, and designated EMS agencies under the supervision of licensed paramedics. Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C in PARA 102, PARA 103, PARA 110, PARA 114, PARA 118, and PARA 122. PARA 207 incorporates previous knowledge gained at the basic EMT level and PARA 103 and provides material for management of pre-hospital emergencies including assessment and management of neurological, behavioral, abdominal, metabolic, geriatric, and multiple trauma patients. The principles of triage, management of mass casualty incidents, and telecommunication are also included. [Semesters Offered: Winter]

Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C in PARA 102, PARA 103, PARA 110, PARA 114, PARA 118, and PARA 122. This course builds on the information learned in PARA 110 as a basis for more advances arrhythmia interpretation. Management of cardiac arrest including medications, cardioversion, transcutaneaous pacing, and defibrillation will be the major emphasis. Pacemakers, 12-lead ECG interpretation, and other advanced procedures and arrhythmias will be presented. Application of theory, judgment and decision making strategies are evaluated. This course provides the paramedic student with additional in-depth information on Advanced Cardiac Life Support drugs including classification, action, use and side effects. Information about other commonly used and prescribed drugs is also provided. [Semesters Offered: Winter]

Prerequisites: Minimum grade of C in PARA 102, PARA 103, PARA 110, PARA 114, PARA 118, and PARA 122. This course is a continuation of Skills I and continues application and theory. Measurement criteria for skills competencies become more stringent and students must become competent in all paramedic skills in preparation for the field internship component.
