It provides a general background to world prehistory, with special emphasis on the Americas. This course explores the trends and general practice of cultural resources management in the United States and provides students a basic understanding of archaeological preservation. Special attention is paid to the form and function of major cultural institutions, including subsistence and economic systems, marriage, family and kinship systems, religion and magic, myth and ritual. Students will also explore questions concerning status, gender, basic personality development, language, reality construction, the mechanisms and effects of culture change, the importance of cultural relativism and the nature of ethnographic investigation.
