This course is a basic overview of the Incident Command System (ICS) and how it works. It is designed to give students the basic concepts as well as familiarize them with ICS that they will have a better understanding of what may occur if called upon to assist during an event and the role of the National IncidentManagement System. Student learning outcomes include knowledge of the basic principles of the National Incident Command System and how this system should function in conjunction with the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and a basic understanding of the purpose and function of the various components of the NICS and how they inter-relate to form an effective and efficient whole.

This course covers the four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. Topics include: emergency management organizing, community resource coordinating, public sector liability, leadership and supervision, public relations, and the roles of government agencies at all levels.

This course covers fundamental information on the state and local role in disaster assistance process and programs, including the role of volunteers and volunteer agencies in emergency management. Students are required to complete three FEMA Independent Study Courses online: FEM 28- State DisasterManagement, FEM 42-Introduction to Community Emergency Response, and FEM 9-The Role of Voluntary Agencies in Emergency Management. Students will meet weekly throughout the semester to in a seminar setting with the instructor and the other students. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the cooperative efforts and capabilities of state, local, and voluntary agencies in emergency situations.

This course allows the student to select online courses offered by FEMA's EmergencyManagement Institute, bundle them together in a module, and receive three hours of elective credit towards the HSEMAAS degree. Students cannot use the following classes for this course: FEM 9 - The role of Voluntary Agencies in Emergency Management, FEM 42 - Introduction to Community Emergency Response, FEM 28 - State Disaster Management. Courses Offered Through Distance Learning. Both HSEM 053 and HSEM 063 have Distance Learning components as set forth above.

This course is a work experience internship in which a student is placed with a public or private agency or corporation involved in emergency management for 6 to 0 hours per week in addition to regular meetings with the HSEM Coordinator. Students will keep a journal of their work experience and deliver a final report upon completion of their placement. Prerequisite: Students must be in the final semester of the HSEMdegree program and receive instructor approval prior to registration.

- This course is an eight (8) week online course offered by FEMA's EmergencyManagement Institute. HSEM 063 is a required prerequisite. The student is required to complete three FEMA independent Study Course online: IS-0 6 - A Supervisor's Guide, IS- 39 ?xercise Design, and IS-650 - Building Partnerships in Tribal Communities.

An introduction to the general concept of the humanities and the various disciplines of art, literature, music, mythology, theatre, film, and how they interrelate. Students will develop critical thinking and writing skills through class discussion, attendance at local performances, and frequent compositions. PREREQUISITE: ENGL 0 3.
