This course, to be taught in a workshop format, is intended for both pre-service and in-service teachers. Drawing upon the recommendations of the National Reading Panel, this course has several purposes: to give the participants a brief theoretical overview of phonological awareness and its role in acquiring the necessary skills for reading success; to give the participants a brief theoretical overview of how musical knowledge is acquired neurologically; and to help the participants understand how a balanced readig program can include a foundation in musical principles to facilitate reading readiness in young children. This course is offered in response to the special needs of professional music and art educators. The course is designed to provide course participants with a comprehensive overview of traditional and contemporary approaches to the measurement, evaluation, and assessment of student learning inthe public schools. A majority of seminar sessions will involve the discussion of assigned readings and related research literature. In addition, there will be practical activities related to performing basic psychometric calcuations, designing and administering tests, designing grading/reporting systems, and developing authentic assessment materials.
