Music and worship topics including secular and sacred music are covered. Learn how churches currently use music creatively to encourage active singing and participating in worship. Students will write worship songs, while studying concepts and practicing skills in song writing. Guest artists will lecture and demonstrate their own music and worship styles, and songs that have been successful in their personal ministries. Classes have interactive conversations and playing of the student music.

Explores the biblical, philosophical, and historical understanding of worship and music. History of church music, hymnody, and song. Societal influences that dictated the direction of the cultivation of different musical and worshipful styles and genres.

An introduction to basic music theory and aural skills. Scales, keys, and chords are identified and basic sightsinging is foundational to learning aural dictation.

4.00 Credits
Examines the role of structuring music and worship ministry within a cultural context. Organizational techniques, helps and tips, licensing issues, and copyright laws, along with extensive rehearsal planning, budgeting, staffing relationships, church government, and overall administration of a worship and music program. Musical and spiritual leadership resources and development are defined and explored to enhance music and worship ministry. Prerequisite: MUSI 110, or consent of the instructor permission

A continuation of MUSI 120 with an emphasis on chord identification, cadences, and chord progressions. Includes a continuation of sight-singing skills, and aural recognition of chords. Prerequisite: MUSI 120 or by instructor permission

Private lessons are open to all students. Private lessons may be taken as a fine arts credit, or for a lesson fee, without credit. Music and Worship majors are required to pass a proficiency test in voice, guitar, and piano, as a part of the requirements for their degree program.

Private lessons offered by professional instructors in the following areas: Guitar, Piano, Drum, and Organ. Music and Worship majors are required to pass a proficiency test in voice, guitar, and piano, as a part of the requirements for their degree program.

Offered to all students. A vocal audition is required. Sign-ups for the audition occur before the semester. Comprised of Worship and Music majors as well as other students who wish to deepen their own understanding of the rich repertoire of spiritual music in a variety of genres and styles. Emphasis on vocal technique and learning to sing within a choral group and ministering through the music presented in the Advent Concerts, Spring Concerts, and other opportunities. The choir may go on tour during the January Term, or during spring break. Students are expected to attend all functions where the choir represents Trinity Lutheran College. Offered for 1 credit each semester.

Explores music from other cultures, to appreciate and understand their spiritual and musical expressions. Opportunities to create different types and genres of music, as well as experience the performance of different pieces of music. Students put together their own music canon of 20 pieces.

Explores the various aspects that comprise a vibrant music and worship ministry: Children's Choir, Handbells, Praise and Worship Teams, Choir, and Band and Orchestra. Emphasis on how to begin, establish, schedule, budget, and totally administer a comprehensive program within the church or school context. Actual practicum experience within a church or school setting is required. Course serves as a prerequisite for student internship. Prerequisites: MUSI 110 and 210
