Offered fall semester only. Academic and applied political techniques designed to provide students with skills to be effective participants in political or advocacy campaigns. Open to students of all majors or political affiliations and part of requirements for the Hinckley Institute of Politics Campaign Management minor. This course is designed to introduce students to practical politics and the management of political campaigns and to help them develop analytical and practical campaign skills through course lectures, guest speakers, and required assignments and readings. Students are strongly encouraged, though not required, to actively participate in a political or advocacy campaign of their choice an average of 5 hours per week during the semester. Recommended Prerequisite: POLS 1100.

Introduction to the study of public opinion, political participation, vote choice, campaigns, and electoral change.

Role of Blacks, Latinos, American Indians, and Asian Pacific Americans in American politics. Topics include constitutional status, citizenship, equality, identity, adaptation, suffrage, participation, representation, coalition, and conflict.

Introduction to law as a means of social ordering, social and political functions of civil and criminal law, organization and functions of courts and the legal profession.

Examination of the central doctrines of American criminal law focusing on the theories of punishment, responsibility, intentionality, and rationality which underline such doctrines. Special emphasis on how the criminal law draws on, and contributes to, moral theory and the state's role in regulating personal conduct.

Introduction to models used in public policy analysis; explores key issues from such areas as environment, health, welfare, criminal justice, and civil rights.
