Survey of classical Persian literature (9th-18th century) in English. Major themes and trends in classical Persian literature from the early Islamic period to the end of the 18th century. In depth study of the development of classical Persian prose and poetry as well as its main authors. This course is taught in English.

In this course, we will learn the basic tenets and early history of Islam, and study Islam in America, with attention to the current issues facing Muslim-Americans in the U.S. Five issues that we will especially focus on in reading and discussing Muslim-Americans' lives will be issues of identity, religion, race, nationality, and ethnicity. Our study of this urgent topic will be against the backdrop of misperceptions and stereotyping of Muslims by the mainstream media, especially since 9/11, as well as the targeting of Muslims as terrorists. This course is taught in English.

In this survey course, students will learn about the history of Iranian film and view films from various genres of this much talked about national cinema. Begins with an introduction to the modern history of Iran and the history of Iranian cinema. Class sessions are divided into two parts: viewing films in the first half of the session, followed by general discussion in the second half of the session. This course is taught in English.

In this course, the students will be introduced to the rich cultural interactions that have taken place over centuries of time between South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) and Iran. Both located on the ancient Silk Route, the economic, technological, cultural, philosophical and religious exchanges between India and Iran started over 2,000 years ago, and in certain ways, is still ongoing today. From religious communities (Zoroastrian/Parsi, Shi'a Muslim, Jewish) finding exile in India and influencing their new home country in numerous ways (e.g. giving rise to modern Indian theatre and the film industry), over literary and linguistics cross-fertilizations, to modern dance and film industries that bloom and influence each other, South Asia and Iran share a rich history and heritage. This course is taught in English.
