ARTH 4150: Early Medieval Themes

The first centuries of the Common Era saw transformations in the visual language of east Mediterranean architecture and material culture in response to shifts in world views. Course content will problematize how 'late Hellenistic', 'late antique' and 'early Christian' framings shape our understanding of a diverse artistic landscape out of which emerges multiple conventions of medieval art. Through discussion, oral report, and written essays, students will explore the phenomenon of 'Christian capitals' as sties of the new state-sponsored religion.
