Considers elements of Japan's prewar culture that encouraged the rise of militarism; Japanese invasion of China; attack on Pearl Harbor; Japanese, Chinese and American strategies during the war; strategic bombing, use of atomic weapons; Allied occupation of Japan; and how residents of East Asia remembered World War II.
