Ability to read notes on the treble and bass staves; ability to read and count basic rhythms in 2/4,3/4, and 4/4 using whole notes, dotted half notes, half notes, dotted quarter notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, dotted eighth notes, and sixteenth notes. A study guide is available from the department. Prerequisite for MUSI 1312: Passing grade in MUSI 1311 or written consent of the instructor. A basic study of the material of counterpoint and harmony. The study is made through listening and observation of the literature. Lessons in application include activities in keyboard, composition, and analysis.

The sight singing portion includes singing of nontonal melodies and contrapuntal examples. More complex melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation will be covered.
