An em pha sis will be placed on un der stand ing the ex peri men tal evi dence sup port ing criti cal con cepts. Top ics in clude gene struc ture and regu la tion; ge - nome re ar range ments; the mo lecu lar ba sis of dis ease (can cer, etc.); sig nal trans - duc tion;im mu nol ogy; de vel op ment; and cur rent trends and con tro ver sies. Tech - ni cal skills will be de vel oped by com plet ing a proj ect in volv ing the pu ri fi ca tion of plasmid DNA, gel electro phoresis, restriction en do nu cle ase map ping, sub - clon ing and se lec tion of "for eign"DNA, DNA blot ting and hy bridi za tion, PCR,and DNA se quenc ing util iz ing computer- aided analy sis of se quence data. Pre req - ui sites: CH 3411, 3412; BL 1401, 1402, two ad vanced bi ol ogy courses that must in clude one among: BL 3481, 3492, 4451 or 4495. (Lec ture 3 hours; Lab 4 hours.)
