A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Utilizes the nursing process to deliver care to individuals and families in varied structured health care settings. Focus in on health promotion/health maintenance, nutrition, pharmacological management, communication, ethical/legal aspects, and course-related psychomotor skills. Emphasis is on physical and psychosocial assessment of newborns, children, and adults in the collaborative management of individuals and families during childbearing and child rearing ages and in caring for individuals undergoing selected surgical interventions. Introduction to the role of the professional nurse as provider of care, coordinator of care, and member of the profession. Topics include but are not limited to the fundamental concepts of nursing practice, history of professional nursing, a systematic framework for decision-making, mechanisms of disease, the needs and problems that nurses help patients manage, and basic psychomotor skills. Emphasis on knowledge, judgment, skills and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. (4 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Introduction to the profession of nursing including the roles of the registered nurse with emphasis on the application of a systematic, problem-solving process to provide care to diverse clients across the life span; and including applicable competencies in knowledge, judgment, skills, and professional values within a legal/ethical framework. Focus is on caring, competent nursing care of adults in acute and transitional care settings. Emphasis in the lab component is on medical and surgical asepsis; assessment; documentation; safety; selected skills for basic care needs; oral/topical medications. Content includes applicable competencies in basic workplace skills. Licensing/Certification Agency: Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas (BNE). This course is cross-listed as RNSG 1423.
