Designed for the student interested in Solaris certification, this course is for new users and covers how to use the basic Solaris operating environment. Topics include fundamental command-line features of the Solaris operating environment file system, file permissions, the text editor, command shells, and basic network use. Open-source philosophy, history, and advocacy. Includes identification of current legal, ethical, and economic issues. Also covers a survey of available open-source software and comparison of open-source and closed-source licenses. (3 Lec.)

Addresses how to install and maintain Sun systems, configure and troubleshoot the Network File System (NFS) environment, and configure the Network Information Services (NIS) environment. Includes installing a stand-alone system, adding users, backing up and restoring file systems, and adding new printer support. Emphasis on the procedures needed to perform these system administration tasks. Introduces the concept of the system and disk management. This course is cross-listed as ITSC 1458.
