A survey of computer design concepts, terminology, processes, and procedures. Topics include computer graphics hardware, electronic images, electronic publishing, vector-based graphics, and interactive multimedia. (3 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Visual design elements as they relate to new media. Emphasizes aesthetics and visual problem solving such as typographic issues, color management, hierarchy of information, image optimization, and effective layout. This course is cross-listed as ARTC 1359. The student may register for either ARTC 1359 or ARTC 1459, but may receive credit for only one of the two. (3 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. (3 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Continued study of illustration media and techniques using digital and/or traditional tools. Emphasis on conceptualization and composition. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Principles of digital image processing and electronic painting. Emphasis on bitmapped- or raster-based image marking and the creative aspects of electronic illustration for commercial and fine art applications. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Theory and techniques for pre-press preparation using industry standard software for final file output. Topics include the procedures and problems involved in computer file preparation ranging from trapping, color separations, and resolutions to printing basics and service bureaus. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Survey of the evolution of graphic arts as it relates to the history of art. Topics include formal, stylistic, social, political, economic, and historical aspects. Emphasis on the art movement, schools of thought, individuals, and technology as they interrelate with graphic arts. (3 Lec.)

Includes layout procedures from thumbnails and roughs to final comprehensive and print output. Emphasis on design principles for the creation of advertising and publishing materials, and techniques for efficient planning and documenting projects. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)

Exploration of problems in typographic design including computer generated letterforms as elements of design. Includes theory and techniques of traditional, contemporary, and experimental typography. (2 Lec., 4 Lab.)
