Field course in horticulture to study Texas native plants in their natural environment. The class will study the different regional ecosystems such as the Trans-Pecos, High Plains, East and West Cross Timbers, Central Texas (Hill Country), Piney Woods of East Texas, the Valley, the Gulf Coast and the Post Oak Belt. Students will learn about the varied soil types, rainfall, temperature ranges, and elevation of the regions. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. (6 Lab.)

An in-depth study of herbaceous plant material. Topics include practices and procedures used in the identification, growth, propagation, maintenance, and utilization of herbaceous plants in the horticulture industry. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

A study of the physical properties of soil including structure and texture. Topics include the origin and development of soils, the composition of a soil horizon, and the interrelationship between soil fertility and plants. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

Exploration of the concepts and practices used in preparing landscape plans. Projects in constructing and improving landscapes through survey, perspective, contour and construction drawings. (1 Lec., 6 Lab.)

Exploration of landscape construction materials and the methods used for installation. Topics include site preparation, use of common construction materials, landscape lighting, water features, and general construction details. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)

In-depth coverage of various species of warm and cool season grasses including their uses, application, adaptability, environmental tolerances, anatomy, and physiological responses. (2 Lec., 3 Lab.)
