IEP 091: Intensive English: Written And Grammar
1.00 - 5.00 Credits
Centralia College
Intensive English Writing and Grammar prepares non-native English speaking students for writing in pre-college and college level academic and technical courses. Difficulty and length of writing assignments increases with level. Writing fluency is stressed. At lower levels content rather than organization is stressed; later, detailed development with standard written English conventions are stressed. Topics are primarily descriptive or narrative at lower levels, moving to summaries of readings, then more complex explanations with multiple modes of development for higher levels. Students are encouraged to write about themselves, their culture or other familiar topics, with some discussion and writing about American culture. Grammatical topics begin with forms of "be" and simple present and past tenses, moving to future and continuous tenses and modal and phrasal verbs; simple affirmatives and negatives evolve to more complex questions appropriate to classroom discussion; proper use of simple articles and common prepositions and pronouns progresses to more complex clauses; simple sentences progress to compound and complex sentences and effective sentence variety. Placement is by test or successful completion of IEP 987A
