Touch control of 10-key pad with emphasis on speed and accuracy. Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division techniques used in solving business problems. Basic or Business Math recommended first. Upon completion of this course students should be able to key at a rate of 130 strokes per minute with a maximum of one error per minute.

Applying principles of effective communication in written and oral business communication: letters, memos, reports, and presentations. Prerequisite: a grade of 2.0 or above in BTEC 110 or COMM 101 or ENGL 101. Keyboarding skills recommended. Upon completion of this course students should be able to produce effective positive, negative, and routine letters, acceptable memos, and accurate reports and graphs.

Topics include: professional image and dress, employer expectations, human relations, receptionist techniques, telephone procedures, processing mail, business ethics, job safety, office supplies and equipment, travel and meeting arrangements, reprographics, financial activities, PC cleaning and care, and internet and email activities. Prerequisites: BTEC 103, 233, 212 or instructor's permission.

Basic principles and procedures of records storage and management. Practice indexing, coding, and filing for alphabetic, numeric, subject, geographic filing systems, and introduction to forms design.

Development of a legal vocabulary with emphasis on definitions and spelling. Upon completion of this course students should be able to recognize and use basic terminology used in the legal field.

Topics include calendars, billing, document production, court structure, research, family law, wills and probate, criminal law, professional image, and receptionist techniques. Upon completion of this capstone course students will be prepared for work in an entry level position in the legal field. Prerequisite: BTEC 110, 240 and 101

Review of legal terminology and the preparation of mailable transcripts from recorded legal dictation. Prerequisite: 2.0 or above in BTEC 110, 240, 103 and typing speed of 50wpm

Development of a medical vocabulary with emphasis on definition and spelling. Upon completion of this course students should be able to recognize spoken medical terms, analyze word parts for meaning, and understand basic medical terminology.

A capstone course for medical office majors. Topics include professional image, medical ethics and law, safety in the medical setting, patient records, appointments, billing and collections, mail processing, meetings and travel arrangements, office finance, patient education, telephone procedures, cultural differences in the medical setting, and health insurance. Prerequisite: 2.0 or above in BTEC 110, 260 and 101

Students will be exposed to the skills necessary to accurately and efficiently prepare and process medical billing claims while using medical office software.
