    This is the first semester of academic transfer Spanish. This course is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication and comprehension. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. This course is cross-listed as SPAN 1311, which is also used in Study Abroad programs.     Prerequisite: SPAN 1411 or the equivalent, or Spanish 1300 and Spanish 1311, or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This is the second semester of academic transfer Spanish. This course continues the oral practice, reading, writing, grammar and cultural studies begun in SPAN 1411. Students are expected to acquire a substantial amount of vocabulary and begin to deal with idiomatic language and more advanced syntax. This course is cross-listed as SPAN 1312, which is used only in Study Abroad programs. Students may register for either SPAN 1312 or SPAN 1412 but may receive credit for only one of the two.     Prerequisite: Spanish 1412 or the equivalent. This course is designed to strengthen and improve oral skills in the language. Oral activities focus on current events, cultural, historical and social issues. Audio-visual media are used to explore Hispanic life and society. This course is intended to complement Spanish 2311.     Prerequisite: SPAN 1412 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This is the third semester of academic transfer Spanish. This course is designed to further develop students' overall language proficiency and cultural knowledge through more advanced reading, listening, speaking and writing exercises. This course is a continuation of SPAN 2311. The stress is on reading, composition, grammatical complexities, and intense oral practice, with continued studies of the culture. (3 Lec.)     This one semester course focuses on and emphasizes the development of: 1) the student's ability to communicate ideas and feelings, both orally and in writing; 2) comprehension skills through the study of reading selections; 3) the study of Spanish speaking countries and their culture(s); and 4) identification of regional variations of Spanish. Such study will lead to the analysis of content, style and sentence structure from contemporary Spanish reading selections. The student is expected either to speak Spanish as a home language or to function at a similar level of proficiency in Spanish or to have teacher recommendation. (3 Lec.)     This one semester course focuses on the development of writing and oral communication skills, including practice in: 1) describing story characters, real persons, animals and natural phenomena; 2) summarizing facts and ideas; 3) giving oral information, instruction, directions, explanations and messages; 4) writing original compositions in Spanish and translating from English into Spanish; 5) reading and discussing well-known Spanish and Hispanic-American historical figures, writers, artists and musicians; 6) gaining a more advanced understanding of the Hispanic culture. The student is expected either to speak Spanish as a home language or to function at a similar level of proficiency in Spanish.     Prerequisite: Spanish 2311 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This course exposes students to the Spanish language used in business, including the terminology and idioms of Spanish business language in special oral and written communication. Emphasis is placed on the structure and content of Spanish business correspondence. Authentic materials are used to give students a contemporary view of business as it is conducted in Hispanic society. This course is not a substitute for Spanish 2311 or 2312. (3 Lec.)     Prerequisite: Spanish 2316 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This course is devoted to the continued development of business language skills with a focus on the accurate use of business vocabulary and business style. Emphasis is on preparing students to function using Spanish in a business setting via practice of receptive and productive linguistic skills. The course also provides training in cross-cultural communication skills and is designed to help students achieve levels of proficiency to meet foreign language needs for business and international trade.
