This is the first semester of academic transfer Portuguese. It is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the language. Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication and comprehension. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. This course is cross-listed as PORT 1411 but is also used in Study Abroad programs. Prerequisite: PORT 1311 or the equivalent or demonstrated competence approved by the instructor. This is the second semester of academic transfer Portuguese. It continues the oral practice, reading, writing, grammar and cultural studies begun in PORT 1311. Students are expected to acquire a substantial amount of vocabulary and begin to deal with idiomatic language and more advanced syntax. This course is cross-listed as PORT 1412 but is used only in Study Abroad programs. Students may register for either PORT 1312 or PORT 1412 but may receive credit for only one of the two. This is a WECM Course Number. Introduction to skills, concepts and techniques of cake decorating. Baking and pastry lab classes require extended periods of time standing in place, lifting heavy weights (up to 60 pounds), reaching, bending, working around open flames and with cleaning chemicals. (1 Lec., 3 Lab.)
