Enhances the Tennessee state mandated mentoring program required for all student who are serving as "Teacher of Record" on a Type II Alternative License. The curriculum will be "student driven" with a wide variety of topics and themes to address the myriad of needs, issues, and challenges encountered by the first and second year teachers. The grading scale is S/U. A mentoring fee will be assessed in addition to tuition cost.

Participants will use all of these during this workshop and will be expected to include them in their finished products. This workshop is designed for the classroom teacher and arts specialist and is adaptable to all grade levels. Participants need to bring a copy of their curriculum or a list of curriculum topics to the first class. The instructor will be able to demonstrate how to achieve your technology goals with only 3 computers in your classroom!

How to use specific teaching software such as Geometer's Sketchpad with middle and high school students. Participants will incorporate these materials into their own practical lesson plans for the upcoming school year. This simulated classroom will set the stage for teachers to develop a mathematics pedagogy and curriculum for their own unique situation. Fee charged.

Provides individuals working in early childhood education an understanding of observation and assessment. A focus will include various observation and assessment instruments and how to effectively use these in early childhood education.

Provides an exploration of contemporary best practice and perspectives on early childhood development for children from patterns and sequences of typical development for children from birth to six years. Emphasis is on individual differences, cultural influences, and the impact of developmental delay and disability during infancy, toddlerhood, and the preschool years. Discussion will also include instructional technology (IT) and assistive technology (AT) applications for this population.

Provides individuals working with early childhood programs a new perspective on how to serve the needs of young children and their families. A focus is included of understanding what is meant by family-centered services as it applies to diverse systems of care, gaining an understanding of family diversity, and exploring the major stress factors facing families today. Discussion includes the theoretical basis for family-centered services, as well as reflection on current research and best practice. This course will also examine the role of early childhood educators and explore ways to build partnerships with parents and create communities of care - for the benefit of our children, and ultimately society as a whole.

An investigation of significant research related to reading with emphasis on school administration, management, decision-making, leadership, and change, the course involves critiquing and oral presentation of materials.

Requiring considerable independent work, students will investigate significant research with emphasis on instructional leadership, the educational change process, and other current educational influences. Students will critique materials selected and orally present their synthesis of research findings.

An exploration of the content that revolves around the development of the curriculum, this course includes curriculum analyses, models, alignment, and evaluation. Integrated curricula, including art, music, and physical education, is emphasized. Means of addressing the needs of students with special needs, including English language learners, will be included.
